Northern Inland Rail Project scrapped due to delays and cost blowouts

Plans for the northern section of the Inland Rail Project have been scrapped.

The Melbourne-to-Brisbane rail corridor was promised to deliver freight faster by taking more trucks off roads and preventing trains from clogging local rail corridors along the East Coast.

But it has been plagued by numerous delays and cost blowouts, and it’s expected that the project could exceed $45 billion.

The Liberal MP for Groom Garth Hamilton has spoken out against the move, accusing the Prime Minister of betrayal.

Construction will remain on the southern stretch of the rail corridor up to Parkes in New South Wales.

Funding will instead be shifted to boost the reliability and capacity of other rail projects.
